The City Collection of Modern Art is housed inside the Villa Reale of Milan (also called Villa Belgiojoso Bonaparte), a neoclassical Villa built between 1790 and 1798, official residence in Milan for Napoleon Bonaparte and the Field Marshall Radetzky. Surrounded by an English garden, the Villa is situated near Porta Venezia. It has been re-opened to the public after a four year restoration. The Villa houses Art Collection of the 19th century, and today it is well known as a museum under the new name of Villa Belgiojoso Bonaparte. It was opened in 1921, and its collections have grown during the years thanks to many local donations, especially thanks to the Collections Vismara (1981), Grassi (1956, with French and Italian works of the 19th century) and many works by Marino Marini, given by the artist himself since 1973, and now shown in his museum. Due to some room problems, the works belonging to the 20th century gallery are temporary shown in the Visconti’s halls of the castle (Castello Sforzesco). Among the most famous art works of the collection you can admire the Fourth State (Il Quarto Stato) by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo.
