Inside the Palace of Ambrosiana, a simple building, the Cardinal Federico Borromeo let his Library be built in 1609. It was a rich collection of books and hand writings he had found all over Europe. In 1618 he added his private picture collection to the Library, forming the first part of the future Ambrosiana Picture Gallery. Her you can admire masterpieces by Caravaggio (Basket with Fruit), Raphael (a cartoon for the Athens’s School in the Vatican), Leonardo da Vinci (the Musician), Botticelli (Madonna of Padiglione) and Tiziano (Magdalene).
